Title Surveyor's Chain

Description A metal surveyor's chain with a metal tag every 2 metres. Lengths of steel wire looped at both ends and attached to each other by links of steel wire. Measurement from the beginning of one wire length to the beginning of the next is 7.92 Inches (20 cm). There are 100 such lengths in the chain. The handles at either end are brass as are eight small tags attached at different points along the length of the chain.
Provenance Also called Gunters Chain, this was the standard unit for land measurement under the Imperial system. there are 4 rods to a chain.
